Volunteer readers needed across Surrey (CSVA)

Schoolreaders (CSVA)

One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard.

This means they are unable to fully access their secondary education which will have a life-long impact on their opportunities.

Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read. We are calling out for more volunteers across Surrey and the surrounding areas.

1 in 4 children currently leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. This will impact on their secondary school education and can have lifelong negative consequences. If you can spare just an hour a week, you could change a child’s life story.

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week during the school day where they work 1:1 with children to help improve their reading ability, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading.

Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.

What skills do I need?

You do not need to have any specific skills or prior experience. We ask volunteers to be able to commit to one year of volunteering, although holidays can of course be taken during this time. Volunteers need to have a good level of spoken English and be over the age of 18. A DBS check will be carried out by your matched school.

Schoolreaders sessions take place on the school premises during normal academic hours at times that you agree in advance with the school staff. Every school makes its own arrangement with its volunteers, so it should be possible to find a time that suits you.
