Listening Volunteer

Love me Love My Mind (CSVA)

Love Me Love My Mind is a small registered charity based in Epsom Surrey which aims to promote better understanding of mental health and to support the well-being of everyone in the community.

Role Purpose

To be a warm, consistent, and empathetic presence for anyone walking through our doors. Your primary "role" isn't to fix problems or give advice, but to listen actively and ensure that every visitor—especially those feeling anxious or isolated—feels heard, valued, and welcome.

Main Responsibilities

  • The "First Hello": Greet visitors as they arrive, helping them settle in with a cup of tea and an introduction to the day's activities.
  • Active Listening: Spend time sitting and chatting with individuals, providing a "safe space" for them to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment.
  • Recognising Needs: Notice if someone is sitting alone or looking overwhelmed and gently offer them companionship or a quiet space.
  • Signposting: Work with the other volunteers to help visitors find information on local Epsom health services if they ask for professional support.
  • Maintaining Boundaries: Offer empathy and kindness while maintaining healthy volunteer boundaries, ensuring you don't take on the role of a professional counsellor.

What skills do I need?

Skills & Experience

  • Exceptional Listening: The ability to be fully present and "hear" what someone is saying (and what they aren't).
  • Warmth & Empathy: A naturally friendly and non-judgmental personality.
  • Patience: Comfort with silence and the understanding that some people may take time to open up.
  • Confidentiality: A deep respect for the privacy and stories of the people who visit the LMLMM drop-in.

What’s in it for you?

  • Deep Fulfillment: Knowing that your 10-minute conversation might be the only time someone felt "heard" all week.
  • Community Bonds: Become part of a supportive team of volunteers with a big heart.
  • Skill Development: Gain experience in interpersonal communication and mental health support within the Epsom and Ewell area.
