Mentell
Mentell is a UK charity that provides free weekly groups for males aged 18+ to talk in a safe and confidential space, free from advice and judgement. For Surrey residents, the service is available online, and we are looking for volunteers to help facilitate the sessions. Volunteering as a facilitator will all take place online with a view to potentially setting up a local face-to-face circle
Key responsibilities:
· Setting up the space and welcoming members to the circle.
· Practicing and delivering the opening and closing scripts
· Discerning and allocating appropriate time for member sharing
· Uphold and reinforce Mentell’s 7 Principles and 7 Pillars
· Identifying any potential safeguarding concerns and escalating where necessary
· Signposting members to other services if appropriate
Time required
2 hours per week in circle
Full training to confidently facilitate a group is provided through formal learning, and through mentorship on a week-to-week basis when in a circle.
To progress from shadow to lead, the process can take anything from 6 months to 2 years depending on the needs of the individual. Training is individualised through mentorship by an experienced Mentell facilitator.
Formal learning to provide training takes 12 hours in total over 4 x 3hour online sessions on zoom
Weekly supervision is provided, and any additional support can be given
There is also the opportunity to attend our annual facilitator retreat to connect and reflect with other volunteers.
By becoming a volunteer facilitator with Mentell you’ll be supporting our mission to reduce male suicide, and improve the lives of men in out local community.
You will also:
· Develop communication and facilitation skills
· Increase in confidence in holding difficult conversations
· Develop a greater sense of self-awareness
· Be part of a growing community of like-minded men
· Be able to support men in their recovery journey
What skills do I need?
· Friendly and approachable
· Organised and reliable
· A curious mind, and a willingness to learn
You don’t need to be a superhero. What matters most is being well enough to give back, having some lived experience of mental health (your own or supporting a loved one), and the willingness to show up and hold space.
If this sounds like you, or someone you know, we’d love to chat.
